Based off the article this thread is about ( opinion again ). I had no intention of knocking 1095 as a steel choice for a folder, more of example to compare a “super steel” to be used in a “harder” use knife.

WEBFeb 3, 2012 — Yes, our steel is indeed, the now defunct, Sharon Steel Co. 170-06. Long ago (way before Mike Stewart) the knife industry did in fact call Sharon 170-06 : Cro-Van or 1095 Cro-Van or 1095CV. Not just as a marketing name but actually on POs and specs and shop documents.

I have not heard of the maker, but 1095 is a pretty high carbon plain steel, and I believe that 15N20 is generally use for industrial bandsaw blades. I have seen quite a bit of Damascus made out of that steel combo, and given the right heat treat, I think they would make an excellent blade.

WEBJul 2, 2003 — I would say that 1095 is tougher and more suited to larger fixed blades. Is easy to sharpen and is less toothy an edge but gets keener I believe. S30V is much more corrosion resistant obviously, has a more toothy aggressive edge and is less suited to larger stock knived since I believe they are more prone to chipping.

Both can be heat treated and tempered to be great quality, but in different ways. 1095 is lower alloy carbon steel, should take a fine edge easier, but lose the working edge quicker. It will also corrode much quicker in wet environments (not an issue for most people who understand the steel).

WEBNov 29, 2016. #2. As far as I know the cro-van is only used by Kabar/Becker. It is supposed to be a slight improvement over standard 1095. From what I have seen it seems to be good but nothing such as a revolution compared to 1095... it is still 1095. IMHO 1095 is a good non stainless steel.

So over 1095 it will resist corrosion better. Versus 1095 it will be a bit more prone to chipping (depending on heat treat ect.). 1095 takes an easy edge.
