WEBMay 13, 2019 · Now that I know, I'll adjust my ordering accordingly. They are cheaper because of the custom sizes that they offer. For instance, I needed a 1" thick piece of 6061 that is 7" X 18". Midwest has it for $39.80. Online Metals has it for $239.06 because I have to order a piece 12" X 24". That's why I ordered from Midwest.

WEBDec 17, 2022 · I have a small project I want to put together, and it involves drilling & tapping in 1/8" x 1/8" square steel bar. Looking at OnlineMetals.com, I have four alloy choices: keyway stock, 1018 carbon steel cold finish, W1 tool steel cold drawn, and O1 tool steel. I plan to hand-file very small V-notches onto one of the surfaces.

WEBDec 21, 2018 · I like 12L14 if it doesn't need to be hardened. Machines and taps very nicely. Otherwise I use O-1 for things I'm going to harden.

WEBApr 29, 2019 · I was looking at Speedy Metals, I was surprised to see the the cheapest, or should I say "least expensive" Ø3.00 x 48 steel bar was 12L14. It was even significantly less than the 1018 and a much better material to work with. But still not cheap at $167. Midwest Steel supply has the Ø3.00 x 48 12L14 for $139.

WEBApr 21, 2016 · Interesting. I priced an order yesterday on both sites for about $85 worth of steel round and flat plus a little brass. Speedy was about $3 more, but their shipping was $5 less. I had a 20% off coupon at Online, so they got the order. Ordered yesterday afternoon, shipped today, delivery notice for tomorrow.

WEBMay 13, 2019 · It sounds like the main difference is the color, if you don’t care about that, then 360 might be a cheaper alternative. I buy many of my materials from Midwest Steel Supply, they don’t have 12”x12” sheets of 360 brass, you can get 260 in that size, but their prices are usually pretty good compared to other places.
