Guided walks- am I correct that these take place on Wednesdays at 9am? Does the walk cover the full loop or is it dependent on the guide, the number of stops and time, so the group may turn back and retrace the walk? As a wildlife photographer, I'm trying to gauge the pace of the walk. I hope to visit at the beginning of March. Thanks!

Hi Stewart T: You are correct, the Bird Rookery Swamp walks take place every Wednesday (NOV - APR) at 0900. The walk is "time dependent". In other words, depending upon the number of questions, the number of wildlife encounters, the fitness of our guests and the interests of our guests (birders, photographers, etc.), you may cover more or less miles - but, you will return to the parking area about 11:30-12:00. They will never cover the whole 12 mile loop. At anytime, our guests may separate from the group to satisfy their own pace. But, we ask that you notify the walk leader so that they don't have to look for you in the last gator pool! We look forward to seeing you in March. I assure you that you won't be sorry. Thanks for your question. CREW - Bird Rookery staff

The Corkscrew part of this sanctuary has a beautiful raised boardwalk right through the middle of the old growth cypress trees. It is the only original collection of these Old Cyprus trees in the US (maybe even the world) and there are lots of signs explaining what you are looking at. This 2 1/2 mile boardwalk is raised above the swamp, accessible only on foot, and a must see to believe it. You can spot many bird species as well as alligators sunning on small islands surrounded by the swamp.water.
