How much time would you need to allow to really take in the battlefield? Also, the Visitor Center gate closes at 5, park grounds close at 8 - can you still drive through the grounds past 5 without being behind locked gates? Thank you in advance for your help!

You should give yourself at least 4 to 5 hours to be able to get a good view through the park. I would try to be out of the park by 5 pm.
