Tensions escalated at the Assam-Meghalaya border as 400 protesters clashed over land encroachment, leading to tear gas use and ongoing unrest.

Assam, for its part, claims Meghalaya does not have the documents to prove its claims. Over 2,700 sq km were officially disputed – although this week’s clash suggests more areas may be contested.

Assam-Meghalaya border issue: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma said that this is the beginning of the process to find a solution for the remaining six areas of differences.

The protest comes just weeks after the second Chief Minister-level round of border talks was held in Guwahati on June 2, 2025, between Meghalaya CM Conrad K. Sangma and Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma.
