It officially made landfall just after midnight on Sept. 16, west of Gulf Shores, Alabama, as a Category 3 hurricane and weakened due to dry air, strong wind shear and cooler waters.

There were six Gulf hurricanes that made landfall in 1886. It should be noted that in 2004, there were four devastating hurricanes — Charley, Frances, Jeanne and Ivan — that impacted Florida.
