The V-22 was grounded after each crash while improvements were made. The Pentagon declared the Osprey “operationally suitable” in September 2005 and called for full production.

A top official from Bell Helicopter said today that U.S. Army's future V-280 tiltrotor helicopter will be far different than the 30-year-old design of the V-22 Osprey.

The V-22 Osprey was unveiled in 1989 as the world’s first operational tiltrotor aircraft. It spent an unusual 18 years in development, finally entering service in 2007 with the U.S. Marine Corps.
