AUSTIN — Members of the Texas House will vote Tuesday for their new Speaker after a month-long divisive battle among Republicans. It's the first vote lawmakers will conduct during the 89th regular legislative session after being sworn in.

Dustin Burrows is elected Speaker of the Texas House, signaling potential bipartisanship in addressing state issues.

The political donations came in the two weeks before the fundraising blackout period tied to the legislative session.

The trial lawyer from Lubbock has served in the House since 2015, slowly building his stature and overcoming a scandal in 2019.

Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick, who heads the Texas Senate, opposed Burrows’ run for Speaker. He has since released a statement saying both the house and senate are required to pass legislation and he’s “counting” on Burrows to pass conservative legislation.

Dustin Burrows (R-Lubbock) won the gavel in a runoff election with Rep. David Cook of Mansfield on the first day of the 89th legislative session with a vote of 85 to 55, with nine members marked present but not voting.
