The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) says it arrested no fewer than 21,580 traffic offenders between January and December 2024 across the 36 states and Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

Mr Mohammed said that the move was part of efforts to curb the rising incidence of crashes involving tankers on Nigerian roads.

The explosion occurred barely a week after 98 people died in a tanker explosion in northern Niger State. Anadolu reported that Nigeria has experienced 172 oil tanker accidents and 1,896 deaths since 2009. 2024 saw the highest death toll, with 266 fatalities.

The death toll stands at 70 so far, according to Kumar Tsukwam, the head of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Niger State.

Eighteen people were also killed in a truck accident in south-eastern Nigeria on Sunday, a week after a petrol tanker explosion left at least 98 dead.

In October, 147 people died in a similar accident in Jigawa state, one of the worst such tragedies in Nigeria. In 2020, the Federal Road Safety Corps listed 1,531 fuel tanker accidents which claimed over 535 lives.
