Kyra Hicks became a believer in quilts as storytellers upon seeing a traveling exhibition of "Stitching Memories: African-American Story Quilts” in 1990.

Each quilt has their own story and personality. One quilt called the “Thimble Quilt.” Sellards says that’s because when she and her mother were working on it, Hicks lost her thimble.
