LOUIS — The Gateway Arch turned 54 years old Monday. The final piece of the Arch was put into place on October 28, 1965. It’s been a well-loved, long-standing symbol of St. Louis ever since.

I t was 11:00 in the morning on Oct. 28, 1965—exactly 50 years ago—when the final metal section of the St. Louis’ Gateway Arch was put into place, completing a monument decades in the making.

With the conclusion of a $380 million restoration campaign, the St. Louis park has finally achieved continuity between the Old Courthouse—newly renovated—and the architect’s towering arch.
