If you go to India now in Google Earth (or Maps) the roads information for 50 of the cities in India came from local knowledge.

Historical satellite imagery on Google Earth has disappeared for India. The imagery is available for other parts of the world. Google says it will be restored later.

The new version of the map includes data from Landsat 8, the newer version of the same satellite, letting Google clear the ugly artifacts. Landsat 8 has been operational since the spring of 2013.
