Happy is about 50 years old (elephants can live up to 70 in the wild), and she has been a resident at the zoo for 45 years. By a few twists of fate, she is not in a family group.
When Happy left Thailand, she flew into American history. In 1971, while war raged in Vietnam, Henry Kissinger, a divorcé, took his two children, ages 10 and 12, on a trip to California.
Yet, Happy, a clearly smart and sentient elephant, has been caged at the Bronx Zoo for most of her 48 years and has remained largely isolated and lonely for more than a decade.

Happy, the famous Bronx Zoo Asian elephant, has been spotted publicly for the first time in nearly 10 weeks – sparking concern from the activist group that monitors her wellbeing.
But Happy has been on her own since her last companion died in 2006, The New York Times reported. Patty, the only other elephant now at Bronx Zoo, continues to spend her day in the open enclosure.
