The REAL ID Act was signed into law in 2005, establishing uniform security standards for state-issued driver's licenses and identification cards and it came into effect as of May 7, 2025.

The requirement stems from the 2005 Real ID Act that aimed to raise security standards for state-issued identification cards following the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attack.
