Over the next few years, many cities planted the trees in parkways. Glendale in 1972 declared the jacaranda its official tree. Developers used them to bring color to new housing tracts.

The jacaranda, a tree native to the tropical and subtropical regions of Argentina and Brazil, will bloom for about the next two months. You can find some prime examples at the L.A. County Arboretum.
