The Texas Legislature was back in session Tuesday, taking up one of the emergency items Governor Greg Abbott identified in his recent State of the State address. The Senate Criminal Justice Committee heard from witnesses surrounding several proposed bills aimed at bail reform.

Texas lawmakers are discussing five proposed bail reforms, including one to prevent undocumented defendants from posting bail for felony charges, and another to give judges discretion to hold

The package of bills would tighten the state's bail laws to keep more people in jail — including undocumented immigrants — while their criminal cases are pending.

Opponents of the bail reform package say the proposed changes are based on false pretenses and could unjustly keep innocent people in jail.

Texas Senator Joan Huffman, who represents parts of the Houston region, said the bills will be known as "Jocelyn's law" and will have to be approved by Texas voters. Those opposed to the bill say these bills would lead to more people being detained before a trial and more potential for racial profiling.
