Former top-10 player Fabio Fognini has announced his retirement from professional tennis. He held a news conference Wednesday at Wimbledon, where he lost to Carlos Alcaraz in a five-setter on Day 1 of the tournament last week.

Alcaraz is establishing a Grand Slam pattern which spells danger for the rest of the field: get him early, or risk not getting him at all.

A couple of days after their memorable battle, Alcaraz responded with characteristic generosity, sending Fognini a signed short for his son from their match. The veteran, touched by the gesture from the 22-year-old, proudly shared the gift on his Instagram story, praising the young champion's sportsmanship.
