Kolkata: The convict in the RG Kar hospital rape and murder case, Sanjay Roy, is likely to work as a gardener initially in Presidency Correctional Home where he is lodged, an official said on Wednesday.

The Sealdah court rejected CBI's plea seeking death penalty for Roy, saying the crime did not fall under the "rarest of the rare" category.

The CBI will file an appeal before the Calcutta High Court seeking a death sentence for Sanjay Roy, who was sentenced to "life imprisonment until death" by a Sealdah court in the rape and murder case of an on-duty doctor at R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital, officials said Wednesday, January 22, 2025.

Kolkata: The West Bengal government has appealed to the Calcutta High Court's Division Bench against the trial court's life imprisonment verdict convicting Sanjay Roy in the RG Kar case. The next hearing in the case will be held on 27th January.

As an unskilled worker, Roy could be given work like gardening. "It will be decided within a day or two. He will first learn and work as an apprentice," the official said. Roy is also allowed to walk and exercise and can leave his jail cell if he stays in the cell block under the supervision of special guards.

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) opposed the Mamata Banerjee-led West Bengal government's plea before the Calcutta High Court against the life imprisonment awarded to civic volunteer Sanjay Roy by a CBI court, the accused in the horrific RG Kar Hospital rape and murder case.

Sanjay Roy was held guilty under Sections 66 (rape), 64 (causing injury resulting in death) and 103 (1) (murder) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
