One of Yellowstone National Park’s oldest gray wolves, a one-eyed matriarch dubbed 907F, has died after sustaining wounds in a fight with a rival pack. Affectionately named “queen of the wolves”, 907F lived to the grand age of 11 – exceptionally long for a wild canid – and birthed an astonishing 10 litters in her time.

All reigns, no matter how historic, ultimately come to an end. And according to officials, Yellowstone National Park ’s “Queen of the Wolves” finally passed away at 11-years-old after succumbing to wounds from a fight.

Record-breaking Wolf 907F, the alpha of the Junction Butte pack, died after a confrontation with a rival pack at Yellowstone River on Christmas Day.

The collar on 907F, one of the best-known gray wolves in Yellowstone National Park, signaled "mortality" last week—indicating the matriarch of the Junction Butte pack had died of injuries suffered in a fight at age 11.
