A former zoo owner, Frank Thompson, brought Connie to the U.S. with seven other elephant babies who were orphaned in Zimbabwe in 1987 when poachers killed the adults in the herd for their tusks.

During the experiment, elephants in Zimbabwe showed an ability to change their gestures to something more elaborate when they didn’t get exactly what they wanted.
