Tropical Cyclone Jasper crossed Australia’s northeast coast on Wednesday as a category 2 storm that lashed the sparsely populated region with winds of up to 87 mph.

Tropical cyclone Jasper north-east of Australia is forecast to reach high end category 4 intensity later on Thursday and possibly category 5, the Bureau of Meteorology said in its latest forecast.

Cyclone Jasper crossed the Queensland state coast late Wednesday as a category 2 storm on a five-tier scale that whipped the sparsely populated region with winds of up to 140 kph (87 mph).
