Overnight, a new message was painted on the Rock. A few hours later early Wednesday, that one was painted over, too, and then another message replaced that one, reportedly at the university's request.

Rylee Warner, a chemistry junior, and Katrina Groeller, a sociology graduate student, painted over the Rock after a new message appeared overnight, "Allow us to protect ourselves, carry on campus." ...

He's aware of all the messages that have been painted on the Rock, saying "everyone has their own opinion." But Altgilbers added that painting the Rock with a political message was "insensitive." ...

Rock projects help people feel more connected, said Charity Blair, who started one in Jefferson City, Miss. Her Facebook following quickly jumped from 200 to 13,000.

Another rock bears the Chevrolet logo and the phrase “Like a Rock.” Some rocks have Bible verses or flowers or are painted to look like a ladybug, ice cream cone or Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle.
