According to the NAEP, Michigan ranked 44th in the nation for fourth-grade reading and 31st for eighth-grade math in 2024. The NAEP uses scale scores to report student performance.

Nationally, Maryland fourth graders jumped from 40th to 20th place on reading. There were also small improvements in the national rankings on fourth grade math, and eighth grade math and reading.

However, between 2022 and 2024 NAEP data, the percentage of North Carolina's students scoring at or above the proficient level has increased in both fourth and eighth grade math by 6 percent.
