Benjamin Schulte will carry the Guam flag during the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics opening ceremony Friday.

Cunningham attributed the flag's design to a woman named Helen Paul. Paul, he said, saw a drawing by local artist Francisco Feja and was inspired to create her design.

An early morning June 12 flag raising ceremony followed by a serving of traditional Filipino breakfast kicked off 126th Philippine Independence Day celebrations on Guam.

Guam sent its full team to a flag-raising ceremony at the International Center in the Olympic Village.
