The Old Farmer's Almanac says the moon got the nickname because wolves were likely heard howling in mid-winter. Wolf experts say the pack may be howling during full moons for other reasons.

The first full moon this year is the Wolf Moon, and howling at it is said to be an expression of readiness to reintegrate with the pack after a period of self-exploration. Sounds about right.
