At a synchrotron X-ray source, the team took computed tomography (CT) scans of over 100 of these fossils. They digested some fossils with acid to liberate plant matter for study under the microscope.
As for volcanic evidence, the rocks containing these fossils do have some volcanic detritus, but there isn’t evidence of intense pyroclastic flows, the team says.
