Herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) spreads easily from person to person through direct contact with skin or contact with saliva. HSV-1 causes blistering sores around the mouth and lips. These sores are called cold sores, fever blisters, or oral herpes.

HSV-1 most commonly causes oral herpes, sometimes called cold sores or fever blisters, on your lips, mouth, and throat. Most people with oral herpes picked it up as a child, maybe from a kiss or from passing toys from mouth to mouth in daycare. Over half of Americans have been exposed to HSV-1.

HSV-1 often causes oral herpes, which can result in cold sores or fever blisters on or around the mouth. However, most people with oral herpes do not have any symptoms. Most people with oral herpes get it during childhood or young adulthood from non-sexual contact with saliva.
