3. Rainfall-runoff analysis - Food and Agriculture Organization
As defined in Chapter 1, water harvesting is the collection of runoff for productive use. Runoff is generated by rainstorms and its occurrence and quantity are dependent on the characteristics of the rainfall event, i.e. intensity, duration and distribution.
2.1 Rainfall. Rainfall input data consists of depth, temporal distribution, and duration of the design storm. The stochastic part of hydrologic analyses using a rainfall-runoff model is the rainfall. Depths of precipitation are recorded over various periods at thousands of locations nationwide.
Each rainfall-runoff model contains algorithms that control the calculation of runoff. Models can be categorized by the structure and spatial processing of these algorithms into empirical, conceptual, physical, lumped, semi-distributed, and distributed models.
