On a single ticket, your luggage is automatically sent to your connecting flight. In Madrid there is only passport control so carry luggage doesn’t save you any time.

If you do go with the 1.5 hour connection and the passport control line is long, look for the fast track line and ask the attendant to let you use it. Last time I went through Madrid, the fast track line was about a half hour faster than the regular line.

Jan 25, 2020 · Beware that the Madrid airport is HUGE. If you need to change terminals, it could take a long time to get to the boarding gate. I would give yourself at least 3 hours connecting time. If you happen to book your Madrid to Barcelona flight with the same airline as your miles flight, that airline MIGHT send your luggage all the way to Barcelona.

But it easily could have been longer as the express train from madrid runs on a 30 minute interval and I caught it right as it was leaving. If I had it to do again of course It would be much faster.

I stayed at Hostal Martin (not hostel--hostal is a small hotel) twice but the last time was in 2005. My experience is obviously not current so read the reviews.
